Survey dataset for copying strategies and factors that influenced loss of animals by smallholder farmers in Greater Letaba Local Municipality during the 2014-2016 drought
The research was designed to answer the following questions: I. Were the smallholder farmers prepared for the drought that occurred in 2014-2016 in the Greater Letaba Local Municipality (GLLM)? II. What coping strategies did the smallholder farmers in the GLLM area adopted that enabled them to cope with the drought of 2014- 2016? III. What interventions did the government and other none Governmental agencies implement to assist the farmers cope with the drought of 2014-2016? IV. Which socioeconomic factors were significantly associated with the number of animals that the farmers lost? A cross-sectional questionnaire based survey was conducted to collect the data from a randomly selected sample of small holder livestock farmers in GLLM in Limpopo Province, South Africa. The data shows farmers were aware of the impending drought, adopted some copying strategies to mitigate the drought conditions and measures government plus other agencies implemented to assist farmers mitigate the effects of the drought conditions experienced in the study area during the 2014-2016 period. In addition the data shows a deficit in the reach of extension officers in the area. Finally, the data shows that certain groups in the population were more vulnerable to the drought conditions and thus suffered more loss than others.
